The Beauty of #BTS

I’ll never forget my days in public television, up until midnight labeling Beta tapes (that dates me!) on the front, spine etc. My boss looked up at me and said in a droll tone, “I don’t know about you, but I’m in it for the glamour!”

Fast-forward to a successful partnership between the House Beautiful digital and print teams where we turned a one-page print feature into an immersive interactive experience. At the shoot, everything in front of the camera was impeccably arranged. Behind the camera — reality.

People have always loved behind-the-scenes (BTS) content, but it’s even more compelling these days in our “Instagram vs. Reality” world. How did they achieve that spectacular look? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hot off the press, I share scenes from my client’s midtown Manhattan luxury apartment project. By the time Premiere Systems Design left, the apartment was spotless, the equipment rack tucked away in a closet as it worked its smart home magic. The 85” 8K Sony TV and its custom matte grill lay flush with the wall, giving no indication of all the effort that went into suspending roughly 200 lbs. securely in place. Getting to this point in less than a week took far less glamorous work such as programming, testing, drilling, opening walls, painting, and spackling.
